Introduction
- The DNS (Domain Name Service) converts human-readable domain names (e.g.: example.com) into computer-readable IP addresses (e.g.: 192.0.32.10). DNS relies on "DNS zones" that exist on the server to convert domain names to IP addresses.
- WHM provides the ability to add a DNS zone that will be managed by the DNS service installed on the server. This functionality is offered by DNS Functions, specifically Add a DNS Zone. This DNS zone will be added based on a template, which can also be edited from the WHM interface, specifically WHM >> Home >> DNS Functions >> Edit Zone Templates.
- When adding new cPanel accounts or addon domains, DNS zones are added automatically.
Requirements
- WHM login details. These can be found in the email with the management details of the reseller account or the VPS with cPanel/WHM.
Steps
- After logging in to the WHM panel on the left side of the page, we will go to the section DNS Functions and click on Add a DNS Zone. Alternatively, we can search for this menu using the search field at the top.
- On the next page we will have the fields:
-IPv4 Address - An IP address to which the DNS records should point
-Domain - The main domain of the DNS zone.
-Associate with Account (Optional) - Here we will be able to select from the list a cPanel user who will have editing privileges over this DNS zone. - Once the fields are filled out, we will click on Add Zone.
- If everything went successfully, we will be greeted by a confirmation message.
- The primary domain will use the added DNS zone if it has nameservers that point to the server where the changes were made.
